A peristaltic pump, also known as a roller pump is used for pumping various liquids through flexible tubes. The pump uses a system known as perisalsis where fluid is pumped through the tube compressed by a rotor or roller.
Peristaltic pumps are used to pump fluids (typlically clean and sterile, but also aggressive fluids) to prevent any contamination with exposed components of the pump. They are mostly used to pump fluids that must be protected from enviromental effects and also protect the environment from the fluid.
A peristaltic pump is also used to pump blood the heart and lung machines during heart bypass surgery.

How does a Peristaltic Pump Work?
Peristaltic pumps are used for pumping various liquids through a tube or hose using a positive displacement method. The tube or hose is compressed and relaxed alternatively to draw content and product away. This action makes the perstaltic pump an extremely precise dosing pump, ensuring that there is an exact amount of liquid pump each time.
Any liquid that is pumped by the peristaltic pump is completely contained in the hose or pipe so as not to ever come in contact with any external parts. The pump uses a roller to move along the hose / tube which creates a perfect seal for the discharge and suction of the pump. The rotor forces the liquid through the tube or hose away from the pump and discharges it. When the pump releases the pressure causes a vacuum effect which sucks the liquid into the suction area of the peristaltic pump.
Benefits of a Peristaltic Pump
Peristaltic pumps offer solutions to pumping products that are corrosive, viscous or abrasive. They are low maintenance pumps as they do not contain valves or seals that usually wear and perish over time, in fact the only part of the systems that requires maintenance is the tube or hose.
Any liquid being pumped does not come into contact with pump and is only inside the tube or hose, allowing for easy sterilisation of the pump.Peristaltic pumps do not containt any seals as the liquid is only contained in the tube or hose which prevents corrosion and leaks.
The part that is perishable is the hose or tube, which a quite cheap to replace.
